NeXT / OPENSTEP
A development environment can outlive the workstation that introduced it.

Historical context
NeXT’s computers were commercially difficult, but NeXTSTEP and later OPENSTEP became influential object-oriented development environments. After Apple acquired NeXT, that software lineage became foundational to Mac OS X and Cocoa.
Founder lens
This is one of the histories every development-platform founder should study. The hardware can lose and the environment can still win history. A coherent toolchain changes the cost of turning ideas into software. SIDE and the Lattice both inherit that question.

The workstation as a coherent instrument
A NeXTcube: hardware, operating environment, development model, and presentation conceived as one system.

A broad, source-linked systems lineage behind XERXES SI: operating systems, networks, telephone infrastructure, hacker culture, radio, optics, acoustics, biology, security methodology, hardware, workstations, and the physical culture of technical discovery.
