A signal path you can literally see

Optical benches are unusually honest systems diagrams: source, lens, mirror, splitter, sensor, alignment, loss, and measurement are physical objects with consequences.

NIST’s history of optical-fiber metrology describes the coordination among manufacturers, customers, standards bodies, and government measurement laboratories that helped establish specifications for a growing fiber industry. The lesson is broader than fiber: high-performance ecosystems need common measurement language.

When a beam misses by a fraction, the system does not care that the diagram looked elegant. Precision is not aesthetic fussiness; it is whether the path closes.
